  • Why Raw Apple Juice is Better than Pasteurized

    Apple juice is one of the most popular juices of all time, second only to orange juice (the drink used for Screwdrivers, Tequila Sunrises, and A LOT of smoothies!). Apple juice is great for babies, children, and adults, as it's a nice mild drink.

    When you think of apple juice, you no doubt picture the juice you buy in cartons on your supermarket store. But hold up! Did you ever think about what kind of juice you're buying?

    I'll tell you what kind of juice it is: pasteurized apple juice. "What does that mean?" you may ask.

    Pasteurization is a process wherein food is heated to a certain temperature and then immediately cooled. The purpose of this process is to prevent the growth of microbes and bacteria in our food. The FDA requires juice and milk to be pasteurized in order to be sold commercially.

    However, what you may not know is that the process of pasteurization actually removes a lot of the things that makes apple juice healthy.

    Apples contain a lot of enzymes, fiber, minerals, and vitamins that make them one of the healthiest fruits on the planet. We all know apples can:

    • Suppress cravings
    • Make you feel full
    • Strengthen your teeth
    • Boost your immune system
    • and so much more…

    All of these benefits come from the various enzymes, carbohydrates, minerals, proteins, and vitamins in the apple.

    But when the apple juice is heated up in order to be pasteurized, those enzymes, vitamins, and minerals are destroyed by the heat. When the apple juice has come out the other side of the pasteurization process, all that's left is the fructose (sugar) naturally found in apples. There are still some nutrients left, but such an insignificant amount that apple juice is no longer the healthy treat it should be.

    That's why you NEED raw apple juice instead of the pasteurized stuff sold on supermarket shelves. Raw apple juice still has the glucose that makes it so sweet and tasty, but it's also loaded with the enzymes, fiber, vitamins, proteins, and minerals that make it such a healthy choice.

    One thing to keep in mind is that raw apple juice tastes VERY different from the juice you'll find in stores. The pasteurization process sort of "cooks" the apple juice, giving it a richer, deeper flavor--an artificial flavor, to be perfectly honest. When you drink raw apple juice, you get all the natural flavors from the apple itself. It's a different taste, and one you'll have to get used to over time.

    Another thing to know is that the FDA does not allow raw apple juice to be sold in stores. There are methods of treating the apple juice that does not eliminate the nutrients, but which does get rid of the microbes and bacteria living in your juice.
